CBA is currently seeking volunteers to fill the positions listed below. Please click on the various positions to learn more about what’s involved.

WATER QUALITY MONITORS:

CBA volunteers monitor water quality monthly at 145 stations throughout the watershed, primarily across the Choctawhatchee Bay and in Walton County’s coastal dune lakes. They are trained to collect basic water chemistry parameters as well as some actual water samples that are analyzed by the University of Florida for nitrogen, phosphorous, and chlorophyll. Explore the Water Quality Monitoring section of our website for more details. We currently need volunteers to fill the following positions within this program:

Fort Walton Beach: Crew Members
Destin: Team Members
Allen Dune Lake Monitor
Oyster Dune Lake Monitor
Fuller Dune Lake Monitor

RAINFALL MONITORS:

The Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance (CBA) is sponsoring the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, better known as CoCoRaHS as they expand in Florida. As CBA starts to analyze data and look at trends, it would be helpful to have rainfall information for local areas. As you know, when it rains in Niceville, it is not always raining in Destin, and vice-versa.

To volunteer, you need to be willing to monitor a gauge daily that will be installed in your yard. You will submit your readings online, so you will need access to a computer with reliable internet connectivity. You will also need to purchase a specific piece of equipment which will cost (with shipping) $29.00. CBA will be willing to sponsor some volunteers who are interested in the program but unable to afford the expense. The Okaloosa and Walton Counties coordinator William Pizzolato will assist in the installation of the gauge and the training necessary to record rainfall patterns.

Please review the attachment for more information about the project. If you have any questions, please contact either CBA at 850-729-6456 or Okaloosa and Walton Counties coordinator William Pizzolato at 850-883-1190.
